Solar Basics

Do I need any permission to install a solar system on my roof?

You need approvals from authorities like SEDA and TNB to secure your Net Energy Metering (NEM) benefits. We’ll handle all applications and obtain necessary approvals. If you live within a gated community, you may also need to obtain a permit from your management office for us to conduct the installation.

Do solar panels work at night?

Solar panels don’t work at night because they need sunlight to generate electricity.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

They still work using available sunlight, but expect a slightly reduced output.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels (also known as PV or photovoltaic cells) capture sunlight and with an inverter, convert it into electricity that we can all use.

How is solar eco-friendly?

It’s clean, renewable, not generated by fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal) and doesn’t emit any harmful pollutants.

Is a battery required for storing electricity from my solar panel system?

Under the government’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, solar panel systems are linked to the TNB power grid. They export excess solar electricity to TNB and draw from it when needed. The grid effectively serves as storage, so a battery isn’t essential.

Will I have solar electricity during a TNB outage?

No. For the safety of TNB technicians working on repairs, your solar panel system will automatically shut down during an outage and resume once TNB power is restored. For uninterrupted power, the inverter we install is capable of integrating with a battery and cut-over switch; however, please note that these are not included in our standard package.

What type of inverter does Emit Solar use in their solar systems?

Emit Solar is using Huawei SUN2000 string type inverter. The Huawei SUN2000 Smart Energy Controller offers exceptional performance with up to 98.6% efficiency and advanced safety features including AI-powered arc fault protection, rapid shutdown capability, and connector temperature detection. This future-ready inverter supports three-phase asymmetric output with 200% overload capability, integrates seamlessly with LUNA battery storage systems for whole home backup, and can increase energy generation by up to 30% when paired with optimizers. Built with IP66-rated durability, natural convection cooling, and smart connectivity through built-in WiFi and the FusionSolar app, it combines robust engineering with intelligent monitoring while meeting international grid standards across multiple regions - making it an ideal choice for both immediate solar installations and expandable energy storage systems.

How many types of inverters are available in the market?

There are several types of solar inverters available in the market, each designed for different applications and system sizes:

  • String inverters - Most common for residential and small commercial systems, connect multiple solar panels in series
  • Microinverters - Attached to individual panels, good for complex roof layouts or shading issues
  • Power optimizers - Combine with string inverters to optimize individual panel performance
  • Central inverters - Large units for utility-scale solar farms and big commercial installations

Lab cells go above 30%, but they aren’t sold yet.

Can the solar system generate enough power for 5 air conditioning units?

To estimate accurately, please share your average monthly TNB bill. Mentioning 5 AC units alone doesn’t give a complete picture of your actual electricity usage.

Solar Safety

Are solar panels safety hazards?

Solar panels are similar to other electrical appliances in your home, like refrigerators and air conditioners, in terms of safety.

Can my roof handle the weight of solar panels?

Yes, most roofs can. To ensure safety, we consult with you and conduct a general inspection to check for issues like termite and water damage before installation.

Do I need to do anything to my roof first?

If it needs repairs, it’s best to sort that out before the panels go up. If not, we’re good to go.

Do solar panels cause fires?

Not when designed and installed correctly. Our solar panel system designs exceed industry standards and local regulations, ensuring utmost protection with earthing, circuit breakers and surge protection for both panels and inverters. All our installers are licensed by the relevant authorities, ensuring professional and safe installations.

Do solar panels give off radiation?

Solar panels are free from harmful radiation. The electric field radiation from inverters is minimal, similar to that of a fluorescent light tube.

Are solar panels safe for my roof?

Yes. We install panels on a mounting structure to ensure no direct contact or damage. As a bonus, they can help cool down your roof.

Net Energy Metering (NEM)

Am I eligible for NEM?

Yes, if you’re a registered TNB consumer in Peninsular Malaysia with your name on both the property title and TNB bill.

How long can I enjoy the benefits of NEM for?

The contract for NEM lasts for 10 years.

Is it important to apply early for NEM?

Yes, since NEM has a limited quota. Our goal is to help you secure your share as quickly as possible by gathering the necessary documents early on. This ensures that everything is in order for a smooth application process.

What documents do you need for my NEM application?

We require copies of your MyKad, last 3 TNB bills and proof of home ownership (e.g., Cukai Taksiran bill), in compliance with SEDA requirements:

  • Document consistency: We check that names and addresses match on all documents.
  • Document corrections: Discrepancies in documents like the Cukai Taksiran bill, may take up to three months to correct.
  • Eligibility verification: We verify that your TNB account is eligible for NEM, and address any name or tariff mismatches, which could also take up to three months to correct.
  • System design: Your TNB bills also provide us with insights into your electricity usage history, helping us design an appropriate system.

What happens after my NEM contract ends?

It depends on the government policy at that time. Our systems are designed with a zero-export feature that lets you continue saving on your TNB bill by directly using the solar electricity generated by your system. And as technology advances, using a battery storage system may become a more feasible option.

What happens if I export more solar electricity to the grid than the total amount of electricity I consume?

You’ll accumulate NEM credits in your TNB bill. These credits offset your TNB bills in the months ahead, up to 31 December each year.

What if I use less solar electricity than the solar panel system generates?

Under NEM, excess solar electricity is exported to TNB, essentially selling back at the rate you pay. This results in a ‘net’ amount in your monthly TNB bill.

What is NEM?

Net Energy Metering (NEM) is a government incentive scheme that allows you to install a solar panel system to generate your own electricity and reduce your electricity bills.

How does NEM work?

Here’s a simple explanation:

  • Consume electricity as you normally would (for example: 1,000 kWh).
  • Generate your own electricity through your solar system (for example: 650 kWh).
  • Pay TNB for the difference between what you consume and what you generate (1000 kWh – 650 Kwh = 350 kWh).

When will NEM registration be confirmed after a site visit?

We can collect the required documents from you first to apply NEM before site survey. Submitting these documents does not commit you to proceed – you can still decide not to move forward, with no cost incurred.

Is the NEM program still valid after the 10-year rent-to-own contract ends, allowing me to continue selling excess energy back to the grid?

The NEM 3.0 program, which is open for applications until July 2025, allows you to export excess energy to TNB for a 10-year period that coincides with your rent-to-own contract, after which the system converts to a self-consumption (SELCO) model.

Energy Hub & EV Charging

Can I hire my own contractor to install safety components inside the Energy Hub?

No. The Energy Hub is covered by warranties, and unauthorised modifications could void them. Additionally, using subpar components could be safety hazards and/or cause power trips.

Can I install other brands of EV chargers?

Yes, basic charging functions will work. Dynamic load charging may not be available, depending on the EV charger brand.

What’s the difference between single-phase and three-phase chargers?

Three-phase chargers provide higher power capacity, allowing for faster charging than single-phase chargers. However, charging speed also depends on your EV’s onboard charger – if your car can only accept single-phase charging, using a three-phase charger won’t speed it up.

Do you provide a complete EV charging solution?

Yes, but only for Huawei EV charges currently, for both single-phase and three-phase chargers.

How does this compare to traditional EV charging?

  • Each home has a main circuit breaker limit set by TNB.
  • If total power consumption exceeds this limit, the power supply trips.
  • Most EV charger installations set a fixed charging limit to prevent this. This means your charger is permanently capped at a lower power level, even when more power is available.
  • Dynamic load charging adapts in real-time, allowing your EV to charge at maximum capacity whenever possible, while still ensuring home electrical safety.

What are the other advantages of charging with the Energy Hub?

By integrating your EV charger with our smart meter, you can potentially charge cheaper and faster.

  • Solar-first charging – Pioritises solar electricity when available, reducing your reliance on utility supply and lowering your electricity bill.
  • Dynamic load charging – Directs all available power to the charger when possible, allowing for faster charging.

Note: These features are currently compatible with our Huawei inverters and Huawei EV chargers.

What do you mean by quick EV charger setup?

Our Energy Hub simplifies EV charger installation by eliminating the need for extensive installation work.

  • It comes preinstalled with all necessary cables and connections to your home’s main Distribution Board (DB).
  • It includes a dedicated space for essential EV charging safety components.
  • With these pre-installations, most of the EV charger setup is already done.
  • Simply add an EV charger circuit breaker and residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) from us, and your EV charger can safely tap power directly from the Hub.

What is dynamic load charging?

Dynamic load charging allows your EV to charge at the highest available power without exceeding your home’s electrical limit. It continuously monitors your home’s power usage and adjusts the charger’s power output accordingly to prevent overloading.

  • When home power usage is low (e.g., no one is home), more power is redirected to your EV for faster charging.
  • When other appliances are in use, charging power is automatically reduced to avoid power trips.

What is required to integrate an EV charger into the Energy Hub?

  • The required safety components based on your EV charger’s specifications.
  • Cabling from the Energy Hub to your EV charger.

Why don’t you preinstall the essential EV charging safety components?

  • EV charger specifications vary based on brand and model.
  • Some car manufacturers even bundle their own EV chargers, which may have unique specifications.
  • To accommodate these, we provide flexibility instead of preinstalling components that may not be compatible.

Why do you only provide Huawei EV chargers?

  • When paired with a Huawei inverter and our preinstalled smart meter, dynamic load charging is enabled.
  • Huawei is also a trusted brand, known for reliable and high-quality energy solutions.

How much does EV charging solution cost?

We offer three EV charging solutions, with pricing determined based on your selected option and further discussion to match your needs.

  • Full – We supply and install both the Energy Hub and a Huawei EV charger.
  • Flexible – We supply and install the Energy Hub, while you provide your own EV charger.
  • Essential – We install the necessary safety components and wiring, and you handle the EV charger installation separately.

Can the Huawei SUN2000 inverter integrate with Home Assistant?

Yes, the Huawei SUN2000 inverter can integrate with Home Assistant using the Huawei Solar integration available through HACS (Home Assistant Community Store).

This integration allows you to monitor real-time data from your inverter, including solar production, battery status, and grid export/import.

Installation

Can I opt to install the inverter and Emit Digital Energy Hub inside my home?

We do not recommend placing these components inside your home for several reasons:

  • Heat dissipation: Open spaces keep your inverter cooler for better performance and longer life.
  • Accessibility: Easier maintenance without disrupting the household
  • Future-proof: Easily integrate an EV charger or batteries in the future.

Do I have to install the system size you propose?

You are free to choose differently, and we will customise a configuration accordingly. When deciding on a system size, consider future energy needs like EV chargers or more aircond units. Do take note:

  • Optimally-sized system: Considers your current TNB consumption and Malaysia’s tiered electricity pricing structure, to ensure the best savings for every RM spent.
  • Oversized system: May generate more electricity that you consume and have excess NEM credits that would be lost at the end of the calendar year.
  • Undersized system: May not generate enough solar electricity to cover your needs or keep you off the higher tariff tiers.

Do you conceal cables during installation?

We do not conceal cables within walls. However, all cables are neatly organised and housed in industry accepted trunking.

How long does it all take?

Installation generally takes up to 8 hours, subject to site and weather conditions.

How many solar panels will you install?

The number of solar panels we install will depend on your system size. We will propose a system size based on your electricity usage (from your TNB bills), the current tariff structure and government policies. Our goal is to maximise your total savings over your 10-year NEM contract.

What does the installation entail?

  • We mount the solar panels on your roof using industry-standards methods.
  • The inverter and Emit Digital Energy Hub are placed outside your home, as close as possible to your home’s electricity distribution board (DB).
  • Proper wiring connections are made between all components.

What equipment do you install?

Yes, but if your proposal is over 14 days old, it is no longer valid. In this case:

  • We will provide you with an updated proposal,
  • You must accept the updated proposal, and
  • You must submit all necessary NEM application documents (complete and in compliance with SEDA’s requirements).

If you need any assistance, please contact us via WhatsApp.

What happens if my NEM application is denied?

We will do our best to help you resolve the issue. Do note that:

  • If SEDA denies your application because you are not eligible for NEM, we will not be able to proceed with installation and the Guarantee will no longer apply.
  • If denial is due to an error on our part, the Guarantee remains valid.

What happens if the NEM quota has been fully distributed?

We will need to wait for updates from the government and/or relevant authorities on new quota allocations or other incentives. This would, however, delay the process and void the Guarantee.

What happens if you don’t meet the Guarantee?

If your system isn’t installed within 30 days from the above-mentioned start date due to a failure on our part, we will provide you with a RM500 rebate.

What is this 30-Day Installation Guarantee?

Our 30-Day Installation Guarantee ensures that we install your solar panel system within 30 days, so you can start enjoying your solar savings as quickly as possible.

This does not include TNB activation, which may involve upgrading your meter to support NEM and take up to 2 weeks after installation.

What other situations could void the Guarantee?

Unexpected issues discovered on site – such as pre-existing roof conditions including leaks, structural issues or cracked/brittle tiles – would make it unsafe to proceed with installation and therefore void the Guarantee.

Who is eligible for the RM500 rebate?

Only those who register their interest and book a home visit between 24 February and 30 June 2025 are eligible.

Do note that slots for home visits and installations are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

When do the 30 days installation guarantee start?

The 30-day period starts after both of these conditions are met:

  • You accept our proposal.
